Black History Month is an annual observance for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. In 2016 we mark Black History Month with a programme of events that focus on RACE@LSHTM and ask the questions: What Do We Teach? How Do We Research? Who Do We Employ?

Kicking off the second week of our Black History Month event programme at the School, Baseball in the Time of Cholera tells the story of a cholera epidemic that rages in Haiti, and which was unwittingly introduced into the country by United Nations peacekeepers. Despite the UN’s denial, the evidence is overwhelming. Amongst all of this, are the stories of a young Haitian boy with a passion and flare for baseball and a Haitian Lawyer seeking justice against the UN.

The film will be followed by a Q&A discussion with Dr Zindoga Mukandavire, who will discuss his research on cholera in Haiti. Dr Zindoga is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health & Development. His scientific interests are to design and apply mathematical models to understand and solve problems in biology, medicine, epidemiology and public health. His interests are in HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and cholera, with an emphasis on collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
